All you need to know about audiences, filtering and alerts

Updated yesterday

In June, a more comprehensive understanding of your audience is possible through the use of three main categories of filters: User-specific, Company-specific, and Event-based.

Audience filters in June

  • User trait filters

User-specific filters are based on individual users' traits. These filters enable you to only look at users that match a certain criteria. For example you could look at only users located in US.

  • Company trait filters

Company-specific filters are set based on the company traits. This is the same concept of the user trait filters but at a company level. For example you could consider only companies that are on the enterprise plan.

  • Event-based Filters

The third type of filter, Event-based filters, allow you to focus on users who have performed specific actions a certain number of times in a certain time range. These filters are crucial for understanding the frequency of user activities and identifying trends or patterns within your user base. For example, you can set a filter to show users who have logged into your application more than ten times. This can help identify your most active users or determine the effectiveness of a feature or service.

How Filters Work with Reports

Regardless of the filter type, June's reporting function allows for the cross-application of filters, providing a better of your audience's behavior.

When you add a user trait filter and look at a company-level report, June will display only those companies that have users who comply with these filters.

Similarly, applying a company-specific filter and switching to a user-level report will only display users belonging to companies that meet the applied company filter.

Event-based filters also work in this manner. When applied, they can impact both company-level and user-level reports. For instance, if you set an event-based filter to only show users who have performed a specific action more than five times, and you then view a company-level report, only companies with users who meet this criterion will be displayed.

Where and how to use filters

Audience filters can be used in various places in June:

  • Inside a Report

  • In the People section

  • In Saved Audiences

  • In the Live Feed

  • In Slack Alerts

In each of these places you'll be able to combine multiple filters (user traits, company traits and event based filters) in the way you prefer.

Here's an example:

In this case we combined two different operators: AND, OR. You can do so by creating a Filter Group by adding a filter with the + and then by clicking in + Add Filter.

Essentially you can change the operator within a Filter Group without changing the global ones (in this case the and ). Or similarly, change the global filters without changing the ones within the filter group. This allows you to nest ANDs, ORs :)

Audience Alerts in June

June allows you to set up audience alerts so you can proactively stay informed when important changes occur within your audience. This feature helps Success teams stay focused on their day-to-day work while ensuring they get notified when a customer requires special attention.

How to Set Up Audience Alerts

  1. Navigate to your Audience
Go to the desired audience and click "Create Alert" in the top-right section.

💡 Note: Alerts cannot be created for the default "All" audience to prevent unnecessary notifications.

  2. Configure Your Alert Options

    • How to Receive Notifications: Choose between Email or Slack.

    • Where to Receive Alerts:

      • For Slack: Select the Slack channel you'd like notifications sent to.

      • For Email: Add the email addresses to receive the alerts.

    • Frequency: Set how often you want notifications:

      • Daily, Weekly, or Monthly (sent at 9 AM CET).

    • Message Format: If you choose Slack, you can use any Slack-supported formatting. See Slack's formatting guide for details.

      💡 Example Slack message template:

      ➡️🚪 {{company.name}} with total spend ${{company.traits.total_spend}} just entered {{audience.name}}

  3. Advanced Settings

Decide when you want to be alerted:

    • Entered: When someone enters the audience.

    • Exited: When someone leaves the audience.

    • Both: Get notified for both entry and exit events.

Pills in audience alerts

Once you set up audience alerts, a "difference pill" will appear next to your audience name. This pill displays the difference in metrics for your selected audience.

You can click on the pill to access a dropdown menu, where you can toggle the time period between a weekly or monthly comparison. This allows you to quickly view changes over different timeframes for better insights.

Example Use Cases

Here are a few scenarios where audience alerts can be helpful:

  • Churn Risk Alerts: Get notified when a customer enters a "Churn Risk" audience.

  • Milestone Monitoring: Track when someone completes one milestone but hasn’t completed the next step after 7 days.
